About Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket is a town of 14,255 people on an island roughly 30 miles below Cape Cod. Together with the smaller islands of Muskeget and Tuckernuck, it is both a town and a county. For thousands of years the island was Wampanoag land, home to as many as three thousand people in bands led by sachems, when Thomas Mayhew secured it as a proprietary colony in 1641. In 1659 Tristram Coffin and a group of investors bought nine-tenths of Mayhew's rights, paying thirty pounds plus two beaver hats, and English settlement began in earnest.

The settlers' first town stood near Capaum Pond, which was then a small harbor. When sand closed its entrance, they took their houses apart and rebuilt them two miles to the northeast, where the town stands today. Incorporated in 1671, the town was called Sherburne until June 8, 1795, when Governor Samuel Adams signed a bill from Micajah Coffin that renamed it the Town of Nantucket.

“Nantucket, to a Nantucketer, is a continent in itself, a nation, a division of the world which asks odds of nobody and is sufficient unto itself.”
History of Plymouth, Norfolk and Barnstable
  • An island of whalersFarming and sheep wore out the island's land, so in 1690 the islanders hired Ichabod Paddock from Cape Cod to teach them whaling. Wampanoag sailors often filled half or more of a ship's crew. When the Revolution began, Nantucket had 150 vessels and 2,025 men at sea. The Great Fire of July 13, 1846, began in William H. Geary's hat store and burned some 40 acres of town, and by 1850 New Bedford had passed the island in whaling.
  • Neutral in the RevolutionKezia Coffin, sixteen years old, wrote in her diary on April 21, 1775, about shots fired near Boston. About a month later, roughly a hundred Provincial soldiers came ashore and took away fifty or sixty of the island's whaleboats. Trade with Britain kept the island's leaders neutral through the war, and after peace came the Nantucket ship Bedford reached London in 1783 with 487 butts of whale oil, the first ship to fly the American stripes in a British port.
  • Camels over the barA sand bar blocked the harbor mouth. The town voted its first Brant Point lighthouse in 1746; the present 1901 tower, the tenth on the point, joined the National Register in 1987. For whale ships too big for the bar, Peter Ewer led the building of the camels in 1842, two floating halves sunk beside a ship, pumped dry and floated across with it. The Peru came in first with her cargo, and the camels were broken up in 1854.
  • Captain Absalom BostonAbsalom Boston was born on Nantucket. His father had been enslaved, and his mother was Wampanoag. In 1822 he captained the whale ship Industry with an all-black crew, and he helped found the African Meeting House. In 1845 a public school turned away his daughter Phebe, so Absalom and Hannah, his wife, took the case to court and won, opening the island's public schools to all children.
  • Miss Mitchell's CometMaria Mitchell, born on Nantucket in 1818, spent 20 years as the first librarian of the Nantucket Atheneum. In 1847 she discovered a comet that came to carry her name, and later she taught astronomy at Vassar College.
