About Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts
Oak Bluffs is a town of 5,341 people on Martha's Vineyard, in Dukes County. The Wampanoag know the island as Noepe and have made their home on it for about 10,000 years, and their name for this spot, Ogkeshkuppe, means a damp or wet thicket. Europeans settled here in 1642, and the land belonged to Edgartown until 1880, when it became a town called Cottage City. It took its present name in 1907, after an oak grove on the bluffs above Nantucket Sound.
The town grew out of summer religion. Methodists started camp meetings in Wesleyan Grove in 1835, and as the same families kept returning, their tents moved onto wooden platforms and then turned into small cottages, 500 of them by 1880. In 1866 a group of developers hired Robert Morris Copeland to lay out a resort on the treeless pasture next to the camp. Their Oak Bluffs Land and Wharf Company sold 500 lots between 1868 and 1871, and Copeland drew three plans as the place kept growing.
- Gingerbread cottagesOver the years the campground cottages gained porches, balconies and scrolled wooden trim along the rooflines, painted in bright colors, and by the late nineteenth century tourists came just to see them. About 318 remained in 2019, many still handed down in the same families. At their center stands the Tabernacle, an open-sided iron pavilion from the late 1880s. Cottages and Tabernacle joined the National Register in 1978 and became a National Historic Landmark in 2005.
- A chapel for everyone elseNot every summer visitor was a Methodist, so in 1870 the octagonal Union Chapel was built to give the others a place to worship.
- The Flying Horses since 1884The Flying Horses Carousel was built in 1876 and came to Oak Bluffs from Coney Island in 1884, set up a few blocks back from the water at the foot of Circuit Avenue. It is the oldest platform carousel still running, and it is a National Historic Landmark.
- Shearer CottageFor decades the island's other towns would not let Black guests stay in their inns and hotels. Charles Shearer, the son of an enslaved woman and a slave owner, saw the problem and built Shearer Cottage, the first inn for African American vacationers. Madam C. J. Walker, Paul Robeson, Ethel Waters, Lillian Evanti and the composer Harry T. Burleigh all stayed there.
- Dorothy West's islandThe Harlem Renaissance writer Dorothy West settled in her family's Oak Bluffs house in the 1940s. She wrote The Living Is Easy there and spent decades writing a weekly column about local people and events. Her novel The Wedding, about the Black homeowners of the Oval, came out in 1995, edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
