About Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts

Vineyard Haven is a community of 2,747 people in the town of Tisbury, on Martha's Vineyard in Dukes County. The Wampanoag called the area Nobnocket, and colonial settlers named it Homes Hole, a name first recorded in 1646 and the oldest place name on the island. Historian Charles Banks traced Homes to a Native word for an old man, and a hole was a sheltered inlet.

Over time the spelling drifted to Holmes Hole, after the family of John Holmes, who lived from 1730 to 1812 and made his home there late in the 18th century. Many residents were embarrassed to tell people they came from a Hole, and they kept pressing for a new name. Tisbury Harbor was one choice, but Vineyard Haven had the most support, and the Post Office Department made it official on February 21, 1871.

  • The fire of August 1883One Saturday night in August 1883, a fire broke out in the harness factory and spread the full length of Main Street on both sides. When it was over, the Baptist meeting house, 32 dwellings, 26 stores, 12 barns and 2 stables were gone. Residents got little help from outside beyond the first necessities, so they rebuilt the street themselves. R. W. Crocker, who owned the harness factory, started a new building while the old timbers were still smouldering.
  • The island's main portMost travelers reach Martha's Vineyard through Vineyard Haven, the island's main port of entry. Steamship Authority ferries come and go at its wharf all year, while a second wharf in neighboring Oak Bluffs runs only in season. About 2,000 people live here year-round, and the number climbs sharply each summer.
