About Tisbury, Massachusetts

In 1775 the people of Tisbury raised a Liberty Pole on Manter's Hill. A British captain wanted it for his ship, the Unicorn, and a frightened selectman agreed to sell it. His daughter Polly Daggett and her friends Parnel Manter and Maria Allen destroyed the pole instead. The furious captain sailed away without it.

James Allen and William Peabody settled Tisbury in 1660 along with Lt. Josiah Standish. Josiah was a son of the famous Captain Myles Standish. The town's name came from Tisbury in Wiltshire, England. That was the hometown of Governor Mayhew of Martha's Vineyard.
