About Sound Beach, New York
Sound Beach is a hamlet of 7,416 people in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, facing Long Island Sound. It sits with Miller Place on its west side and Rocky Point on its east, on ground that was still empty land in 1929.
That year the Daily Mirror, a New York City paper, began selling its readers lots there measuring 20 by 100 feet. A lot cost $89.50, and a buyer put $12.50 down, then paid $3.50 each month until the debt was cleared; every buyer also had to take the paper for a year. The first owners camped in tents with outhouses and later replaced them with small cottages. For almost 40 years the new community stayed a summer resort.
- The Spanish ColonyIn the late 1930s and early 1940s, men from Tabernas, in Spain's province of Almeria, came to Sound Beach to hunt pheasant. Their families bought small Daily Mirror lots and built bungalows, with outhouses, on and around Shelter Drive for weekends and summers. In time they moved in year-round, and the neighborhood became known as the Sound Beach Spanish Colony.
- Downtown at The SquareThe center of the hamlet's downtown is called The Square, where Sound Beach Boulevard meets New York Avenue. The volunteer fire department stands close by on Sound Beach Boulevard.
- Stairs down the bluffsHard winter storms on Long Island Sound keep wearing at the shore, so many of the wooden stairs that lead from the bluffs to the beach have had to be rebuilt more than once. Beach access, parkland and the clubhouse are all managed by the Sound Beach Property Owners Association, and residents need a pass all year. The sand near the cliffs turns rocky at the water's edge.
