About Sullivan, New York

Sullivan is a town of 14,794 people in the northwest corner of Madison County, with Oneida Lake along its northern edge. Settlers began to arrive around 1790, and in 1803 the land was split off from Cazenovia to become a town of its own. Sullivan did not keep all of that ground for long, because in 1809 part of it was divided off to create the town of Lenox.

  • Named for General John SullivanThe town carries the name of John Sullivan, a general who served in the Revolutionary War.
  • Between the lake and the creekOneida Lake forms the whole northern border of Sullivan, and Chittenango Creek runs along the northern half of its western line, where the hamlet of Bridgeport sits. The town government meets in the village of Chittenango, in the southern part of the town.
