About Lenox, New York

Lenox is a town of 8,768 people in Madison County. The south shore of Oneida Lake and Oneida Creek form its northern line, which is also the border with Oneida County. Lenox was created on March 3, 1809, when it was split off from the town of Sullivan, and it later gave up 5,000 acres of its land when the town of Stockbridge was formed.

The Erie Canal runs east to west across Lenox and passes through the village of Canastota, which holds half of the town's people. A stretch of the canal at the center of the village has since been filled in. Lenox Basin, a spot along the canal east of Canastota, still carries the town's name on the waterway.

  • Home of the county seatThe village of Wampsville, in the southeast corner of Lenox near the city of Oneida, serves as the seat of Madison County.
  • Boxing's Hall of FameLenox is home to the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
  • Canal days in fictionThe novelist Walter D. Edmonds set some of his books in this part of New York during the years the Erie Canal was being dug, and they portray how people here lived at that time.
  • A namesake in IllinoisNew Lenox, a village in Illinois, was named to honor this town.
