About Oneida, New York

Oneida is a city of 10,329 people in Madison County. Like Oneida County and the silverware company, it takes its name from the Oneida people, whose colonial-era lands spread around Oneida Lake. Sands Higinbotham founded it in 1834. He gave land to the Syracuse and Utica Railroad on the condition that every passenger train stop at a depot he built, and those stops made the settlement, called Oneida Depot, grow quickly.

Oneida became an incorporated village on June 20, 1848, inside the town of Lenox. Its sections quarreled with the rest of Lenox for years, so in 1896 the village broke away as the Town of Oneida, and on March 28, 1901, it was chartered as a city. Its first elected mayor, Julius M. Goldstein, had come from Prussia in 1871 and helped start the Powell & Goldstein Cigar Company.

  • The Higinbothams' Cottage LawnThe Higinbotham family built Cottage Lawn at Main and Grove Streets between 1849 and 1850 and lived there until 1934, when the house was left to the Madison County Historical Society. It is now on the National Register. In 1851 Sands, his son Niles and their partner Samuel Breese opened the Oneida Valley Bank, and Niles later gave the city land for a public park and for four churches.
  • Silverware from a communeJohn Humphrey Noyes founded the Oneida Community, a religious and social experiment near the city, in 1848. Its members made silk and canned goods, then turned more and more to flatware, and in 1880 they started Oneida Limited. The community ended in 1881, but the company became one of the country's leading flatware makers in the 20th century. It still has its headquarters in Oneida, though it no longer manufactures in the U.S. and imports its products.
