About Verona, New York
Verona is a town of 5,974 people in southwestern Oneida County, about 8 miles south of the city of Rome. The land was once part of the wide territory of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois League, who called it Te-o-na-ta-le, meaning "pine forest." Its English name was borrowed from Verona, Italy.
Settlers of European descent first arrived in 1792, once the American Revolutionary War had ended. The area at first belonged to the Town of Westmoreland, but in 1802 Verona was split off and became a town of its own.
- Canal boats at HigginsvilleThe Erie Canal crosses Verona, and the hamlet of Higginsville, on Route 46, became known in the 19th century for building canal boats. New London, in the north of the town, is another hamlet that grew along the canal.
- Hand's VillageThe hamlet of Verona started out with another name, Hand's Village, and it was once the site of a health spa. Mineral springs in the town give off sulfurous gas.
- Turning Stone since 1997In 1993 the Oneida Nation bought land in Verona and opened a casino and bingo hall there. By 1997 the site had grown into a full resort, Turning Stone Resort Casino.
