About Sherrill, New York

Sherrill is a city of 3,077 people in Oneida County, on the west side of the Town of Vernon, along Route 5 and beside the Madison County line. No other city in New York has fewer residents.

The state legislature passed a special act in 1916 that founded Sherrill as a city. Its name honors Sherrill Babcock Sherman, the infant son of Congressman James S. Sherman. Today almost all of the city lies in the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School District, which runs E.A. McAllister Elementary School in Sherrill.

  • A city treated like a villageSherrill's charter sets it apart from every other city in New York. For many purposes, the charter treats Sherrill as though it were still a village inside the Town of Vernon, so the Vernon town government keeps authority over the city's land. Other cities in the state answer to no town at all.
  • The Silver CitySherrill goes by the nickname The Silver City, and its best-known product is flatware, made by Sherrill Manufacturing.
  • Two officers lost in 1969On September 10, 1969, Thomas P. Reilly, who was Sherrill's chief of police, and Robert A. Mumford, a patrolman, stopped a man at the corner of Route 5 and Sherrill Road. They wanted to ask him about a $500 holdup at a Canastota gas station. The man, Martin J. Fitzpatrick, opened fire on both officers. Mumford died that day, and Reilly died three days later.
