About Bridgeport, New York
Isaac and John Delamater settled at the Chittenango Rifts, or Rapids, in 1802. Chittenango Creek drops about ten feet here, giving the place great water power. Before the canal came, schooners of two hundred tons were built at Bridgeport and launched for lake trade.
Each spring the creek here was a famous place for catching suckers and other fish, so the spot was called the sucker bank. Salmon of twelve to twenty-five pounds were once common in nets. Before dams went up, salmon were caught as far upstream as Chittenango Falls.
