About Minoa, New York
Minoa is a village of 3,657 people in Onondaga County, east of Syracuse, in the north end of the town of Manlius. Its land was once part of the Central New York Military Tract. The village grew up around a stop on the Syracuse and Utica Railroad, finished in 1839, and for decades the stop and the houses around it went by the name Manlius Station.
That name caused constant mix-ups, because mail and freight bound for the village of Manlius kept landing at Manlius Station instead, and the reverse happened just as often. In 1895 the community dropped the old name and became Minoa. It was incorporated as a village in 1913 and was known for years as a railroad town.
- A name off a boxcarLocal lore credits Dr. Arthur Root, a physician and community leader, with the new name. He was standing near the station when a train rolled by with the word Minoa painted on the side of its boxcars, and he picked it. The village businessmen's association made the choice official in 1895. The name traces back to Minos, the king of Crete.
- Freight agent from 1860Jabez Lewis won a seat in the New York State Assembly in 1856. Four years later he moved to Manlius Station and took the job of freight agent for the New York Central Railroad.
- Lewis Park since 1963Sidney Smith owned the Minoa Coal Company. In 1963 he and his wife, Mary Lewis Smith, the great-granddaughter of Jabez Lewis, gave the village the land that became Lewis Park, in memory of her great-grandfather.
