About South Laurel, Maryland
South Laurel is an unincorporated community of 29,602 people in Prince George's County, Maryland. Part of it was once Rossville, a settlement of freed African Americans. Most of the men there worked at the Muirkirk Iron Furnace close by.
In 1886, twelve lots in Rossville were surveyed, and African American buyers purchased them. Three years later, the Benevolent Sons and Daughters of Abraham built a lodge on one of those lots. The society looked after the welfare of its members.
- Abraham Hall, built in 1889The Benevolent Sons and Daughters of Abraham used Abraham Hall as their lodge. The people of Rossville also held church services, classes and social gatherings in it.
- A college on a racetrackCapitol Technology University stands in South Laurel on the grounds of the old Beltsville Speedway. The track was also known as the Baltimore-Washington Speedway.
