About Speedway, Indiana
Speedway is a town of 13,952 people in Wayne Township, Marion County, and Indianapolis surrounds it on every side. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway came first, and three years later, in 1912, a residential suburb was laid out beside the track and named for it.
Arthur Newby, Frank Wheeler, Carl G. Fisher and James A. Allison, the four men who founded the track, planned the new suburb on land to the west. Fisher and Allison needed workers for their Prest-O-Lite factory and Allison Engine Company, so the town was meant to house the people who worked there. The investors pictured a place without horses, where everyone would drive cars and help build the parts that made them run. Residents of what was then Speedway City asked to incorporate in 1926, and they became the Town of Speedway that July.
- Its own police forceWhen Unigov legislation joined much of Marion County's government with Indianapolis, Speedway became one of the four excluded cities in the county. Because of that, the town still runs its own police department, separate from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
- Race shops south of the trackBusinesses tied to racing gather south of the Motor Speedway. The United States Auto Club has its headquarters there, Dallara builds racecars at its factory, and A. J. Foyt Racing and Harding Racing keep their teams in town, near the Speedway Indoor karting track. Allison Transmission also has a factory nearby.
- Eagle Creek and its branchesEagle Creek drains the town along its southwest edge. Two of its tributaries, Dry Run and Little Eagle Creek, wind past or around the racetrack, and Eagle Creek flows on east until it meets the White River in southwest Marion County.
