About Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia

Spotsylvania Courthouse is a community of 5,610 people and the county seat of Spotsylvania County, about 10 miles southwest of Fredericksburg. During the Civil War this crossroads became a target of the Union army, and in the spring of 1864 two great armies met around it.

The Union and Confederate armies fought here from May 8 to May 21, 1864, in the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. The battle ended in a stalemate, with neither side able to drive the other off. Much of the battlefield is now protected by the National Park Service.

  • The Bloody AngleGen. Ulysses S. Grant tested the Confederate lines for four days, then ordered his troops to charge straight at them on May 12, 1864. The two armies fought over one section of the Confederate defenses for 20 hours, and the spot became known as the Bloody Angle. That ground is now part of the national military park that preserves the battlefield.
  • Three cemeteriesThe national military park that holds the Spotsylvania battlefield also takes in three cemeteries. Two are set aside for Confederate soldiers who died in the fighting. The third, Fredericksburg National Cemetery, holds the graves of more than 15,000 Union soldiers, many of them never identified.
