About St. Helena, California

St. Helena is a city of 5,430 people in Napa County, part of the San Francisco Bay Area's North Bay. The Wappo people, who spoke a Yukian language, are believed to have settled here as early as 2000 B.C., and they called the place Anakotanoma, which means Bull Snake Village. The later name most likely came from Mount St. Helena, a peak nearby.

In 1854 Henry Still and Charles Walters bought 126 acres from Maria Ignacio Soberanes Bale on the west side of Main Street, and the town grew up on that land. By 1858 it had a school house and a small Baptist church. The first railroad arrived in 1868, hauling out fruit and mining products and bringing in tourists. On March 24, 1876, St. Helena was formally incorporated as a town, and a decade after that it counted 1,800 residents.

  • California's oldest resortWhite Sulphur Springs was discovered in 1848, and by 1852 it was running as a resort that made the area famous. Wealthy San Franciscans came by steamer across the Bay, then covered the final four miles in a stagecoach, and in later years on the train. At its peak the resort's grand hotels could hold 1,000 guests, but wildfires later destroyed them.
  • Heart of a wine valleyThe Charles Krug Winery and Beringer Vineyards are both California Historical Landmarks, and the Charles Krug Winery is also on the National Register. In 1995 the valley around town was named the St. Helena American Viticultural Area, covering 9,060 acres with over 400 vineyards on 6,800 acres. Beringer, Trinchero Family Estates and The Culinary Institute of America are among the city's major employers.

A year later Elvis Presley's Wild in the Country was shot in a small St. Helena house that is now an inn called The Ink House, and A Walk in the Clouds, a love story about a vineyard owner's daughter, was filmed in the north of town in 1995.
  • A town without chainsSt. Helena passed a rule against chain restaurants. The only one left was an A&W that had opened before the law, and it closed for good on March 31, 2026.
