About Stirling City, California
The Diamond Match Company set up sawmills in the forest, and the little town of Stirling City grew up around them. The company held 169,000 acres in Butte, Shasta and Plumas Counties. It built a railroad 31 miles long to link its Chico plant with the mountain mills.
Logs were hauled on the Diamond Match Company's logging road to the sawmill at Stirling City. The mill sawed an average of 210,000 feet of lumber a day. It supported a town of 600 residents. About 800 men worked at the mill and in the logging camps.
