About Surfside, Florida

Surfside is a town of 5,689 people in Miami-Dade County, set between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, with Bal Harbour to the north and Miami Beach's North Beach neighborhood to the south. The Tatum Brothers divided the land into lots between 1923 and 1925, and from 1924 Henri Levy built up Biscaya Island along with the blocks from 87th to 92nd Streets.

Russell Pancoast put up the Surf Club, a private club at Collins Avenue and 90th Street, in 1929 and 1930. Its members worried that Miami Beach would take over their land, so in 1935 thirty-five of them borrowed $28,500 and incorporated the Town of Surfside. Spearman Lewis served as the new town's first mayor.

  • Avenues from Abbott to IrvingSurfside's avenues honor British and American writers, and their names climb the alphabet as they go west from the ocean toward the bay: Abbott, Byron, Carlyle, Dickens, Emerson, Froude, Garland, Harding, Hawthorne and Irving.
  • A Nobel winner on 95th StreetIsaac Bashevis Singer, the Yiddish writer honored with the 1978 Nobel Prize in Literature, moved to 95th Street in 1977 and stayed there until his death in 1991. In 1979 the town renamed his street Isaac Bashevis Singer Boulevard.
  • A community center in 1956In 1956 Surfside bought the Lehman Estate, at Collins Avenue and 93rd Street on the northeast corner, then took more land by eminent domain and built a community center on the site. Hawthorne Park followed in 1960.
  • The Shul of Bal HarbourThe Shul of Bal Harbour was founded at 9540 Collins Avenue in 1983. Roughly a third of the town's residents are Jewish, and as of 2021 that was the highest Jewish share of any community in the Miami metropolitan area.
