About Sutter, California

Sutter is a community of 2,997 people in Sutter County, set at the base of the Sutter Buttes. It began as South Butte, a settlement that grew up around the Butte House stage station, east of where the town stands today. South Butte got a post office on August 7, 1871, which closed on December 17, 1878 and opened again on February 18, 1879.

During the California land boom of the late 1880s, promoters laid out a new town called Sutter City just to the south. On January 20, 1888, the South Butte post office moved over to the new Sutter City office nearby. The post office later dropped the word City so mail would not be mixed up with Sutter Creek, and on January 26, 1895, the name became simply Sutter.

  • A county seat that never wasSutter City's founders placed their town along the route of a planned railroad line, and because it sat near the geographic center of Sutter County, they hoped it would become the new county seat. The railroad was never built, and the county seat stayed elsewhere.
  • The county's first high schoolNo town in Sutter County had a high school before Sutter Union High School opened here. A 1924 county history noted that for years it was the one high school anywhere in the county, and that it kept that standing until just a few years before the book was written.
  • School out for funeralsThe Sutter Cemetery began as the South Butte Cemetery, on the old road west of the settlement that stagecoaches once traveled. The schoolhouse stood right next to it, so whenever a funeral was held, the teacher sent the children home for the day.
