About Tega Cay, South Carolina
Tega Cay is a planned city of 12,832 people in York County, built on a peninsula in Lake Wylie. Fort Mill sits to its east and Rock Hill to its south, Charlotte, North Carolina, is about twenty miles to the north, and Tega Cay has grown into one of that city's suburbs.
The ground here is hilly and covered in thick woods of hardwoods and pines. Water makes up 0.7 of the city's 3.2 square miles, so Tega Cay has 13 miles of shoreline.
- A lake made in 1904The lake that shapes Tega Cay is man-made. Duke Power built a dam across the Catawba River at India Hook Shoals in 1904, and the rising water left this hilly ground as a peninsula. The South Carolina Encyclopedia describes the result as a mountainlike setting joined to a lake made by people.
- The Beautiful PeninsulaThe name Tega Cay is said to come from a Polynesian language and to mean "Beautiful Peninsula." No one has confirmed that story, and the language it supposedly came from has never been identified.
- A 27-hole golf courseTega Cay has a public 27-hole golf course and a croquet court. The city owns thirteen parks, two of them on the lake, along with its own swimming pool. A marina and boat launches give residents a way out onto the water.
