About Thunderbolt, Georgia

Thunderbolt is a town of 2,556 people in Chatham County, about five miles southeast of downtown Savannah. It sits on the western bank of the Wilmington River, a tidal stream that forms part of the U.S. Intracoastal Waterway.

The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town in 1856 under the name Warsaw. It kept that name until 1921, when an act of the legislature changed it to Thunderbolt. Today the town covers 1.5 square miles, and 0.2 square mile of that is water.

  • Named for a lightning strikeLocal tradition holds that the name came from a bolt of lightning that hit the ground here and opened up a spring.
  • Where Pulaski diedCasimir Pulaski, a native of Warsaw, Poland, died in Thunderbolt. By coincidence, the town itself was incorporated as Warsaw in 1856 and carried that name until 1921.
  • The Thunderbolt BatteryFort Thunderbolt, known locally as the Thunderbolt Battery, went up here to guard Savannah against Union troops advancing from Whitemarsh Island.
  • A shrimping townScores of docks for shrimp trawlers line the Wilmington River waterfront, and they make Thunderbolt important to Georgia's shrimping industry. Its seafood restaurants draw many diners from the area.
