About Montgomery, Georgia
Montgomery is a community of 4,443 people in Chatham County, about 13 miles south of downtown Savannah. It covers a neck of land with tidal rivers on three sides: the Vernon to the west, the Moon to the east and the Burnside to the south. Families from the Savannah area first came here to escape the city, and the settlement grew as one of the region's early resorts.
The name honors Major General Richard Montgomery, an Irish-born officer of the Revolution who died at the siege of Quebec on December 13, 1775. The area may also hold an older Montgomery story. Three British baronets, William, James and Robert Montgomery, are believed to have received a land grant here in 1677, long before Oglethorpe's grant of 1733, but disease and a poor location ruined their settlement, so they lost the grant and left for Virginia.
- Beaulieu, settled in 1739William Stephens settled Beaulieu, at the mouth of the Vernon River, in 1739. Beginning in 1743 he served as the first president of the Georgia colony. Nearby Burnside took its name from an early settler, James Burnside, and that old community is now part of Montgomery.
- Pin Point, founded in 1896In 1896, people who had been enslaved on Ossabaw, Green and Skidaway Islands founded Pin Point. A year later they organized Sweetfield of Eden Baptist Church, which continued Ossabaw's Hinder Me Not Church. Children took their lessons in the church until 1926, when a Rosenwald School opened.
- Shrimp, crabs and oystersPin Point families made their living from the water. Ben Bond and John Anderson Seafood got its start in 1900. From 1926 to 1985, A. S. Varn and Sons ran a seafood packing business here. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was born in Pin Point.
