About the Town of Boonton, Morris County, New Jersey
Bakelite, the early plastic, was first made and sold commercially in Boonton. Large rubber companies had turned down the new product. Local man Richard W. Seabury took a chance on it and opened an old rubber works to make it. Before that, Boonton ranked among the largest iron centers in the country for about 50 years.
Samuel Ogden of Newark founded the Boonton Iron Works around 1770 along the Rockaway River. During the Revolutionary War, the works made iron goods for the army. In 1830 the New Jersey Iron Company built new mills near the falls. A new village called Booneton Falls grew up on the hillside above the river.
