About Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey

Lake Hiawatha is a community of 10,194 people in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, Morris County, beside the Rockaway River. Developers started putting up summer houses here in the 1920s, and by 1932 the houses were settled along just three streets: North Beverwyck Road, Dacotah Avenue and Nokomis Avenue. In 1935 the developers steered the river into a new lake and ringed it with cottages, a country club meeting house, a white sand beach, a pavilion, a playground and a barbecue area.

The name comes from Hiawatha, a Native American peacemaker of the 16th century, though the choice was likely inspired by Longfellow's 1855 poem about him. Benjamin J. Kline paid for the founding of the community's public library in 1948. The lake was gone by the 1960s, and owners turned the old cabins into homes for year-round living.

  • The Beverwyck plantationOwners included Lucas Von Beverhoudt, Abraham Lott and William Kelly. In the Revolution the road was known as Washington's Trail, and George Washington, Nathaniel Greene and Lafayette were guests there.
  • Phebe Ann Jacobs, born 1785Born enslaved at Beverwyck in 1785, Phebe Ann Jacobs was given as a child to Maria Malleville, daughter of Dartmouth's President Wheelock, and followed her to Brunswick, Maine, when Maria married Bowdoin's President Allen in 1820. After Maria Allen's death, Jacobs lived free and alone, washing clothes for Bowdoin students. She died February 28, 1850. Mrs. T. C. Upham published her life story in London that year, and it helped inspire Uncle Tom's Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel.
  • A fire company from a basementIn January 1935 a fire destroyed a Wenonah Avenue house. Six men formed a volunteer fire department in a basement, and first met at the clubhouse that February. At first they could afford only three backpack pumps, so they raised money with a boxing match, 50¢ a seat or 75¢ at ringside, and a minstrel show, a stage act of racist caricatures of Black people, that drew 414 people. That August they bought their first engine, a 1913 American LaFrance.
