About Troy Hills, New Jersey
Troy Hills is a community of 5,081 people in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, Morris County, about 6 miles northeast of Morristown. Troy Brook drains the town and flows east into Troy Meadows, which marks its eastern edge, and no freshwater marsh in New Jersey is bigger.
Benjamin Howell was among the leading settlers here. He bought a farm of 160 acres from Gershom Mott and soon put up a farmhouse on it. During the winter of 1779 to 1780, when Washington was camped at Morristown, the Howell farm became an important place for the general's military conferences.
- The old yellow housePeople knew the Howell homestead as the old yellow house. After 1761 it never left the family, passing only from one Howell generation to the next. Mrs. Catherine S. Howell wrote in the state historical society's Proceedings in July 1921 that a fifth generation of the family was spending summers there.
- A Revolutionary neighborBenjamin Howell, who lived from 1725 to 1798, took a public role as the Revolution began. In 1775 he served on the Hanover Township Committee of Correspondence, and in 1776 he became a justice of the peace. He was also a deacon and an elder of the Parsippany Presbyterian Church.
- Two bays grew to fiveThe farmhouse Howell built soon after buying the land was only two bays wide. It makes up the west end of the house that stands today, which later grew to five bays.
