About the Town of Sidney, New York

In May 1772 the Rev. Wm. Johnston explored this country with an Indian guide and chose the site of Sidney Plains. He moved his family there early in 1773. He was the first settler in the Susquehanna Valley in New York. Threats from local Indians drove the settlers away during the Revolution, but many returned when it ended.

By 1940 Sidney village was home to the Scintilla magneto, standard equipment on airplane motors made in the United States. The Scintilla Magneto Company, part of Bendix Aviation, built them here.

  • How the town got its nameSidney was named for Sir Sidney Smith, the British admiral. John Mandeville, an English schoolmaster living on Sidney Plains, first gave the place that name.
