About Tula, Mississippi
Tula is a community of 197 people in southeastern Lafayette County, on Mississippi Highway 331 about 7.5 miles west-southwest of Toccopola. Sources disagree about its name. Some say it comes from a Chickasaw word meaning "rock," and others say settlers borrowed it from the city of Tula in Russia.
“The community of about 200 or so off of Highway 331 in southeastern Lafayette County was once prospering. In the 1920s it was home to the Tula Normal Institute and Business College, a couple country stores and churches. Two-story homes filled the area as boarding for the college.”
- Oil hopes in 1962People once thought Tula sat on deposits of petroleum, and two test wells stood here in 1962. Other oil prospects across northern Mississippi had dried up fast, so most investors stayed cautious. Like many wells around Lafayette County, the Tula wells were abandoned before anyone put much money into them.
- Larry Brown's Father and SonThe author Larry Brown came from Tula, and he set many scenes of his novel Father and Son in and around the community.
- The Tula OpryTula is home to the Tula Opry, a bluegrass music show held right in the community.
