About University, Mississippi

University is a census-designated place of 4,696 people in Lafayette County, and it covers part of the University of Mississippi campus. The Postal Service uses the name as the official address for Ole Miss, which lies west of downtown Oxford and is enclosed on every side by that city.

The school's story here goes back to 1848, the year of the Lyceum, one of three campus resources that survive from its first days. More than a century later the university was still all-white when James Meredith, who had served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force, won a court order to enroll. He registered for classes in the fall of 1962, breaking the school's color line, and he graduated in 1963.

  • A hospital in the LyceumMeredith signed up for classes, paid his tuition and got his schedule in Registrar Robert Ellis' office in the Lyceum. On September 30 and October 1, 1962, segregationist rioters fought federal troops over his admission. Photographs from those hours show the building's long first-floor hall in use as a hospital, a place to hold arrested rioters and a shelter from the chaos outside. The Lyceum and The Circle are now a National Register historic district.
  • A telescope that never cameBarnard Observatory went up on campus between 1857 and 1859. Chancellor Frederick A. P. Barnard hired a Massachusetts firm to build its telescope, with a nineteen-inch lens that was four inches wider than the ones at Pulkova and Harvard, then the world's largest. The firm finished it in 1861, but the Civil War broke out and the telescope was never delivered to Oxford.
  • 20,112 students in 2014The census counted 4,696 residents in University in 2020, while Ole Miss enrolled 20,112 students in 2014. The whole place covers 0.70 square miles, all of it land.
