About Turner, Montana

Turner is a community of 90 people in Blaine County, in northern Montana. Henry Turner built a store here in 1912 and also opened a post office for the settlers coming into the area.

That first site lasted only until 1928. That year the Great Northern Railway built a new line between Saco and Hogeland, so Turner picked up and moved about two miles to stand beside the tracks. The town is still growing: the census counted 61 people in 2010 and 90 in 2020.

“The sixteen block Turner townsite was the most successful of the ten or so new towns created by the railroad.”
National Register of Historic Places, 1998
  • Anna Scherlie's homestead, 1913Anna Scherlie arrived in 1913, one of many women who took up homesteads in this country. Her small shack near town has been kept exactly the way she left it, and the Anna Scherlie Homestead Shack is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Home of the TornadoesTurner Public Schools runs both the elementary and the high school district. The high school teams play as the Tornadoes, and 22 students attended the high school in the 2024-2025 school year.
  • Out on the Big FlatPeople call the country around Turner the Big Flat. The border crossing into Canada at Turner-Climax lies 10 miles north of town, and Chinook is 41.5 miles to the west-southwest.
