About University Center, Virginia

University Center is a community of 3,969 people in eastern Loudoun County, Virginia. The Potomac River forms its northern edge, Broad Run runs along its eastern side, and Route 7 passes to the south, with Ashburn just across the highway. Leesburg, the county seat, lies 7 miles to the northwest, and Washington, D.C., is 30 miles to the southeast.

The new University Center began with a gift of land. Robert H. Smith, a developer known across the region, donated 50 acres, and that gift became the heart of George Washington University's Virginia Science and Technology Campus. The campus welcomed its first students in 1991.

  • Exploration Hall, 1991The campus started with a single building. Exploration Hall was the first to open on the donated land, and students began classes there in 1991.
  • Seven buildings on 122 acresFrom that one building, George Washington University kept adding to its Virginia campus. It now has seven buildings, and the grounds have grown from Robert H. Smith's original 50 acres to 122.
