About University Park, New Mexico
University Park is a community of 3,007 people in Doña Ana County. The city of Las Cruces surrounds it on every side. Its 1.5 square miles take in nearly all of New Mexico State University's campus, so the town and the school are almost the same place.
In 1889 the territorial legislature of New Mexico called for a farm college and experiment station close to Las Cruces. It was named New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and under the Morrill Act it became the territory's land-grant college. Classes began on January 21, 1890. That first term, 35 students and six teachers met on a campus of 220 acres, three miles south of Las Cruces.
“Pioneer Southwestern architect Henry C. Trost had been commissioned to design a plan for the fledgling New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, founded only 19 years earlier. The plan for what was to become New Mexico State University included a horseshoe drive and 13 buildings that were to form the school’s centerpiece.”
- Las Cruces College, 1888In the fall of 1888, New Mexico was still a territory. That year a group opened Las Cruces College in a building with just two rooms. Hiram Hadley, a well-known teacher who had come from Indiana, led the group. The little school later merged with the new farm college.
- Renamed in 1960The college kept its long first name for decades. By 1960 the school had grown a great deal. That year an amendment to the state constitution gave it a new name, New Mexico State University.
- State agriculture headquartersThe school began as a farm college and experiment station, and farming still has a home here. The New Mexico Department of Agriculture has its headquarters on university land, inside University Park.
