About Vassalboro, Maine

Vassalboro is a town of 4,520 people in Kennebec County, with the Kennebec River as its western border and part of China Lake inside its lines. Colonists first settled here in 1760, and the town was incorporated in 1771 under the spelling Vassalborough. It took its name from William Vassall, one of the proprietors who owned the settlement.

Vassall was born in 1715 on his family's sugar plantation in Jamaica. The family's money had depended on slavery since 1648, when his great-grandfather moved to Barbados and went into sugar. Vassall grew up in Philadelphia and then Boston and earned two Harvard degrees, in 1733 and 1743. He sided with the Crown in the Revolution and fled to England, where he spent years seeking payment for the lands Massachusetts and Rhode Island had seized from him, and he died there in 1800.

  • Lot Number 5 in 1770The proprietors set aside certain lots in the new town for themselves. On March 2, 1770, Vassall gave one of them, Lot Number 5, to his niece Mary Prescott of Nova Scotia. She kept it for only nine months, then sold it to a man from Hallowell.
  • Bell's home in East VassalboroAlexander Graham Bell once lived in the Revere House in East Vassalboro. The village is also where the town library and sports field are, and the Vassalboro Historical Society keeps its museum in the old schoolhouse near the China Lake landing. Each fall the East Vassalboro Grange holds the library's book sale.
  • A trail on an old railbedA narrow gauge line, the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway, once ran through Vassalboro before it was abandoned. A new walking trail at the town's recreation fields on Bog Road now follows stretches of its old roadbed.
