About Vinton, Virginia

Vinton is a town of 8,059 people in eastern Roanoke County, and much of its western border runs along the city of Roanoke. Settlers were moving into the area by the late 18th century, and in 1797 the Gish family built a gristmill on Glade Creek. The settlement that grew up around it became known as Gish's Mill.

The Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad later built its line through the Roanoke Valley and made Gish's Mill one of its stops. Through the late 1870s and into the early 1880s, the Gish family worked to build a town around the depot. Residents gathered for a mass meeting on incorporation in 1883, and in 1884 the place was incorporated as the Town of Vinton.

  • Gish Mill on Glade CreekThe mill the Gish family started in 1797 gave the first community both its name and its business. Virginia's historic preservation office credits the mill with driving the mid-19th century community that later became Vinton, and the Gish Mill is now on the National Register.
  • Dogwood Festival since 1956The festival began in 1956 to raise money for the high school marching band. Each spring it celebrates the blooming American dogwood, Virginia's state flower and state tree, and fills downtown with craft and food vendors, an antique car show and live bluegrass, country and rock. A William Byrd High School senior is crowned Dogwood Queen and rides in the parade. In April 2025 the town marked the festival's 70th anniversary.
  • A gorge lake from 1904Vinton's southern edge follows 1.5 miles of lakefront in the Roanoke River Gorge. The lake formed after the hydroelectric Niagara dam went up in 1904, and it lies 890 feet above sea level beneath a steep, wooded cliff 150 feet high. From there the land climbs to the town's highest point, 1,265 feet on Olney Road, which looks out over Roanoke.
