About Wanaque, New Jersey

Wanaque is a borough of 11,317 people in Passaic County. It was once part of Pompton Township, and on February 23, 1918, that township was split into three new boroughs: Wanaque, Bloomingdale and Ringwood. Local voters approved the split on March 22, 1918.

People first said the name as "Wa Na Kee," and it is thought to come from a Lenni Lenape word meaning "land of sassafras." The section of town once called Midvale now carries the Wanaque name, and it and Haskell are each served by their own post office and ZIP Code.

  • Back Beach Park in HaskellThe borough bought the land for Back Beach Park in the early 1980s, and environmental problems stretched the work on it out for a decade. The finished park cost $290,000 and covers 27 acres of sports fields and trails. Hikers can climb the Wanaque Ridge for a view over the town or follow the Indian Hills Trail to the Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah.
  • A mountaintop campElks Camp Moore sits high on a mountain in Haskell, above Route 287. It is an accredited Elks summer overnight camp for children with special needs. Campers attend for free, and local New Jersey Elks lodges help pay for it.
  • Lakeland Regional High SchoolHigh school students from Wanaque and neighboring Ringwood share Lakeland Regional High School, which stands in Wanaque. In the school year that began in 2021, it enrolled 902 students. Younger children attend Haskell Elementary School and Wanaque Elementary School.
  • Protected Highlands since 2004State lawmakers approved the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act in 2004. Wanaque was placed in the Highlands preservation area, so building and land use in parts of the borough follow added rules set by the Highlands council within the state's Department of Environmental Protection.
