About Pines Lake, New Jersey
Pines Lake is a community of 3,033 people in the township of Wayne, in Passaic County, and it grew up around a lake that people made. It started in the 1920s as a vacation spot. In May 1927 F. W. Schwiers, Jr., Inc. of New York began building a dam across Haycock Brook for the Pines Lake Association, and by October the job was done and the water was rising behind it.
The first homes around the new lake were mostly log cabins, and many were put up from American chestnut logs during the 1930s. Families still live in a good number of those cabins all year long. Over the decades the old vacation colony filled in, and today about 500 suburban houses line its shores.
- A dam built in 1927The Pines Lake Dam is a curved gravity arch that stands about 42 feet tall and stretches about 127 feet across, and it collects water from 3.7 square miles of land. A one-lane road runs along its top, where drivers can look down into the Glen, a steep ravine the community keeps as a park. Rare tiger salamanders and native ferns live there, and people have now and then found marine fossils in the Glen.
- Roads named for tribesThe Lenape lived around Pines Lake before Europeans settled here, and stone mounds they left can still be seen in the woods near the lake. The community named many of its streets for Native American tribes to honor them, among them Osceola Road, Iroquois Trail, Algonquin Trail and Mohawk Trail.
- The Baby ParadeEach year, on the weekend closest to July 4, Pines Lake throws a community celebration. Children march in the Baby Parade in costume, on foot, on decorated bicycles or on floats they built at home, and the day ends with a picnic by the beach. The Pines Lake Association also runs a summer program with swimming and sailing lessons, and the Sailing Club's Lobster Bash always sells out.
- Laurelwood ArboretumThe 30-acre Laurelwood Arboretum began as a commercial nursery. Today it is a public park, cared for by the Township of Wayne together with the nonprofit Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum, with ponds, streams, gravel paths and hundreds of kinds of rhododendrons and azaleas.
