About Wanchese, North Carolina
The town was named for Wanchese, the last known ruler of the Roanoke people met by English colonists. Archeologists found that the first fishing village on Roanoke Island stood here. Native people fished at this spot for 1,100 years, beginning about 1,500 years ago. It remains the Outer Banks' center for commercial fishing and boatbuilding.
Wanchese had one of the best harbors in the area and was a trading point for northern Pamlico Sound. It was the center of shad fishing in Dare County, and that industry employed 90 percent of the county's people.
- The island's only lighthouse stood hereDuring the 1800s, Wanchese had the only lighthouse on Roanoke Island, known as Marshes Light. The light has since been rebuilt in Manteo.
