About Waverly, West Virginia

Waverly is a census-designated place of 369 people in northeastern Wood County, set along the Ohio River and West Virginia Route 2, northeast of Parkersburg, the county seat. The 2020 census count was down from 395 in 2010. Over the years the community has also gone by Bull Creek and Union School District, a name it took from Union School, the oldest of the schools that have stood within its boundaries.

“For at least a couple of months, services were held at McKinney's house, located on the banks of the Ohio River in what is now the community of Waverly.”
National Register nomination, 2014
  • Named for its first schoolUnion School came first, and it gave the area its early name. The Pumpkin Knob school followed. It stood where Pumpkin Knob Road reaches its highest point and later served the community as a meeting building, where 4-H groups gathered until it was abandoned. The old Pine Grove School building is still used today, now as the Pine Grove Baptist Church.
  • Waverly Elementary closesWaverly Elementary was the community's last school. Wood County built a new Williamstown-Waverly elementary in nearby Williamstown, and after it was completed, Waverly Elementary shut its doors when the 2019-2020 school year ended. Some residents fought the closing.
  • Free books in May 2021The Waverly library sat on school land that the Wood County Board of Education let it use, so when the school closed, the library closed too. Brian Raitz, writing for the Wood County library, told patrons by email that day, Friday, May 21, 2021, that the whole collection would be handed out free. The last of the books found new homes the next day, May 22.
