About Weaver, Alabama
Weaver is a city of 3,339 people in Calhoun County, just north of Anniston. The Cherokees held this region until they were forced out in the mid-1830s, and white settlers then moved in. Among the first were the brothers Simeon and Linzey Weaver, and their family name later became the town's name.
The Rome and Dalton Railroad ran a line through by 1868. In 1871 Linzey's son David Weaver gave land for a post office, called Weaver's Station, and for a railroad depot, and he worked as both the postmaster and the depot agent. Weaver stayed unincorporated until October 1945, when citizens voted 60 to 4 to set up a town government. As nearby Fort McClellan drew more people, the city put in a new water system in 1950.
- Cave Creek Academy, 1861The area's first school, Cave Creek Academy, opened in 1861. A second school followed in 1880 and lasted until the early 1920s. Over those years it went by three names: Weaver Academy, Weaver High School, and Male and Female High School. The town built a new high school in 1931 and a two-story one in 1974.
- Cotton gins and fireGinning cotton was Weaver's main business, but the gins tended to catch fire. One blaze began in a gin and spread, burning down several other buildings in town.
- Weaverdale or Weaverburg? In the 1890s residents argued over what to call the town. Weaverdale and Weaverburg were both suggested, but in the end the town kept the name Weaver.
- 221 straight wrestling winsThe Weaver High School Bearcats hold a state record of 221 boys wrestling dual-meet wins in a row. Michael Sutton, a Weaver wrestler, became the first high school wrestler to win 6 individual state titles in a row, from 1999 to 2004.
