About West End-Cobb Town, Alabama

West End-Cobb Town is a community of 3,128 people in Calhoun County, and the city of Anniston borders it on the east and south. The settlement was first known as Cobb Town, probably after a local family, and in later years people began calling it West End because it lies just west of Anniston.

  • Mechanicsville became WellbornWellborn, one of the neighborhoods here, went by the name Mechanicsville before 1954. A photograph taken around 1953 shows a teacher with a room of young children, most likely in the Mechanicsville Elementary School.
  • State spelling champion in 1961Janie Forsyth was 12 and a student at Walter Wellborn School in 1961 when she won Alabama's state spelling contest in Birmingham. She lasted through 25 rounds and more than 500 words, and the word cloisonne clinched the title. She then went on to the national championship in Washington and placed among the top 17 spellers in the country, and Rep. Kenneth A. Roberts entered her story in the Congressional Record.
