About West Rutland, Vermont

West Rutland sits on what the 1937 guide called America's most famous marble deposit. Quarrying began here on a small scale about 1844. By the 1930s, crews cut 400,000 to 600,000 cubic feet a year. The vein gave 15 grades of marble, from nearly pure white to dark green.

Marble firms here only began making money once the railroad came in 1851. Around then, the deep quarries at Carrara in Italy became hard to work. Rutland marble rose to the top of the world market. In 1886 the marble companies had West Rutland split off as a separate town.
