About West Sayville, New York

West Sayville is a hamlet of 4,872 people in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, on the shore of Long Island's Great South Bay. In 1849 two families from Zeeland reached New York City under the leadership of Cornelius DeWaal and Cornelius Hage. Zeeland is a seagoing province of the Netherlands known for shellfishing. They had planned to join a Dutch settlement in Michigan, but when they heard about the oysters growing in the Great South Bay, they rode the Long Island Railroad out to Sayville and stayed.

Other Dutch families came after them, and West Sayville was home to about 1,200 Dutch people by 1910. They ran the oyster business at every stage, working the bay as baymen, as planters and as shippers. Their story is now told at the Long Island Maritime Museum, at 86 West Avenue on the former Bourne estate, which since 2003 has held a yearly Seafood Fest with food vendors and live music.

  • Washington stopped in 1790During his 1790 tour of Long Island, George Washington paused at the Samuel Greene House, at 93 Montauk Highway, so that he and his horses could rest before the road ahead.
  • A German wireless stationThe German company Telefunken built a wireless transmitter on Cherry Avenue in 1912, mostly to send messages to Germany. After the Lusitania sank on May 7, 1915, people claimed the station had relayed a German Embassy order to "get Lucy," and the U.S. government grew wary of it. The site is now part of the Sayville National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Seized by the Marines in 1917On January 16, 1917, the Zimmermann Telegram, Germany's request that Mexico join an invasion of the United States, went out through the Cherry Avenue station. President Woodrow Wilson sent Marines to take it over, the first hostile move by the United States against Germany in World War I.
  • The last lifeboat seatEdith Corse Evans, whose family fortune came from tanning hides and from real estate, kept a summer home in West Sayville. When the Titanic went down on April 15, 1912, she gave her place in the last lifeboat to Caroline Brown of Acton, Massachusetts, a mother of six. Brown lived, and Evans died in the Atlantic.
  • Meadowedge, built in 1910Commodore Frederick Bourne and his wife built the mansion called Meadowedge in 1910 as a gift for their daughter Florence. It still stands on the grounds of West Sayville County Park, where a private company now runs it as a catering hall.
