About White Hall, Arkansas
White Hall is a city of 5,581 people in Washington Township, Jefferson County, and it is home to the Pine Bluff Arsenal. Settlers started arriving in the mid-nineteenth century because of the springs here, where water rose from underground into clear pools that were good to drink. That account comes from Ida Mae Gandy, who taught school and belonged to the Methodist church in its early years, and who collected it by interviewing residents and writing down what they told her.
The settlers worshiped at White Hall Church, which had become White Hall Methodist Church by 1895. Around 1898 the community opened its first school, on the ground where White Hall Junior High now stands along Arkansas Highway 365 North.
- Named for a whitewashed churchOne story says the name joined a traveling preacher named White, who preached at the church, with a man named Hall, said to have found the springs. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas finds another account more likely: the church was the only whitewashed wooden building around, so people knew it as the white hall, and the name spread to the whole area.
- A library named for its directorThe Pine Bluff and Jefferson County Library System runs the White Hall Dr. Cora Economos Library, close to White Hall City Park. It honors Cora Economos, who once directed the system's libraries.
