About White River Junction, Vermont

White River Junction is a village of 2,532 people in the town of Hartford, in Windsor County, at the spot where the White River flows into the Connecticut. In 1803 Elias Lyman put a bridge over the Connecticut, running from the north bank of the White River across to West Lebanon, New Hampshire. Even so, only a few people lived here until the railroads came.

Between 1847 and 1863, five separate rail lines were laid through the village site, and the eight-track crossing they formed saw 50 passenger trains a day. From then until rail faded in the 1950s and 1960s, no community in Vermont mattered more to the railroads. Its name joins the river it sits on with that meeting of rail lines.

  • Samuel Nutt's moved hotelIn 1849, the year the village got its first depot, local farmer Samuel Nutt bought a hotel in Enfield, New Hampshire, took it apart and rebuilt it on his farm across the tracks from the depot. He named it the Junction House. Two more hotels later stood on the same ground, and the third, the Coolidge Hotel, was built in 1924. After a renovation in 1997 it reopened with 30 rooms and a 26-bed youth hostel.
  • Way Down East on the iceDirector D.W. Griffith filmed part of Way Down East on the floating ice of the Connecticut and the White, with Lillian Gish and Richard Barthelmess in the lead roles. The entire cast and crew lodged at the Junction House during the shoot. After 1950 Peter Gish painted murals inside the hotel, and one of them, the words "ROOM WITH BATH" beside a big arrow, became a local landmark.
  • Home of the state fairFrom the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th, the annual Vermont State Fair was held in White River Junction. Fairgoers rode the rails right to it, because a special spur line ran up the hill from the station to the fairgrounds.
  • A school for cartoonistsComic artist James Sturm founded the Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction and serves as its director. It is a two-year art school devoted to sequential art, the craft of telling stories in comics.
