About Norwich, Vermont
Norwich is a town of 3,612 people in Windsor County, on the west bank of the Connecticut River facing Hanover, New Hampshire. New Hampshire's governor, Benning Wentworth, chartered the town on July 4, 1761. Its charter wrote the name as "Norwhich," for Norwich, Connecticut, where the first settlers came from, and the extra h was soon dropped.
Settlers came in 1763, cleared farms along the Ompompanoosuc River and stayed through their first winter here in 1765. The town held its first meeting in April 1768, and the Congregationalists organized a church in 1770 and raised a meeting house in 1778. The population climbed fast: 206 in 1771, then 1,158 by 1791, and 2,316 by 1830.
- A military academy in 1819Over its first four years, 480 students enrolled from 21 of the 24 states. In 1822 he led 27 cadets carrying packs on a 150-mile march to Manchester that took four days.
- Home of two lieutenant governorsPeter Olcott moved north from Connecticut in the early 1770s and went on to serve as Vermont's first lieutenant governor. The Georgian farmhouse he built about 1789 survives at Maple Hill Farm.
- Goodrich Four CornersJohn Slafter, son of a proprietor and one of the first permanent residents, left the early town center in the 1780s and settled in the north of town, where Goodrich Four Corners grew up around him. Its farms raised wool until demand fell off in the late 1800s and then turned to dairying. Around 1900 one of the original farms passed to the Goodrich family.
- Beaver Meadow Union ChapelIn 1915, west of West Norwich, a crossroads village, the people who would become its congregation built the Beaver Meadow Union Chapel with their own hands. The chapel began Home Prayers, a ministry by mail, an idea taken from the Sears, Roebuck catalogs.
- Olympic gold in 2010Hannah Kearney grew up in Norwich. She took the moguls gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics and returned to win bronze in 2014.
