About Whitlash, Montana
Whitlash is an unincorporated community of 4 people in the northwest corner of Liberty County, Montana. It lies roughly five miles south of the Canadian border with Alberta, and the only way in is by unpaved road. Ranchers and homesteaders in the Sweet Grass Hills asked for a post office in 1892, and the name that came back from the government was Whitlash.
For its first years the post office had no fixed home, and it changed locations six times. That ended in 1905, when the brothers Alfred and Tom Strode platted a new townsite along Half Breed Creek, giving the community the spot it still occupies today.
“Whitlash owes its name to a typographical error. Local ranchers and homesteaders in the Sweet Grass Hills applied for a post office in 1892 under the name Whiplash.”
- Beside East ButteWhitlash sits close to East Butte in the Sweet Grass Hills, long a landmark of the Great Plains. American Indians held the hills sacred, and they hunted there, fought battles there, went there for spiritual purposes and used the peaks to find their way across the plains.
- Customs from 1933 to 1969For more than three decades the U.S. Customs office worked out of Whitlash itself. It stayed in town from 1933 until 1969, when it moved north to the border, where the Whitlash and Aden border crossing now stands about five miles away.
- A school and a post officeEven with only a handful of residents, Whitlash keeps its own post office and an elementary school that teaches children from prekindergarten through grade 8.
