About Woodbridge, California
Woodbridge is a community of 4,031 people in San Joaquin County, on the banks of the Mokelumne River northwest of Lodi. In 1852 Jeremiah H. Woods and Alexander McQueen began running a ferry over the river, and the crossing, called Wood's Ferry, drew a new road linking Stockton and Sacramento.
In 1858 Woods replaced the ferry with a wooden bridge, and when the town was surveyed in April 1859 it took the bridge's name. Woods hoped his settlement would grow bigger than Stockton and even become the seat of a new Mokelumne County. Those plans ended in 1867, when the railroad skipped Woodbridge and ran its tracks through Lodi.
- A school town from 1879After the railroad passed it by, Woodbridge turned to education. In 1879 the town gained two schools at once, the Woodbridge Seminary and San Joaquin Valley College. Fewer and fewer students enrolled at the college over the years, and it closed in 1897.
- Odd Fellows above a brick storeJefferson Lodge No. 98 of the Odd Fellows was formed in August 1860. The next year the Lavinsky Store went up as a one-story brick building. The lodge later bought the store and built a second floor on top to hold its meeting hall, and the I.O.O.F. Hall joined the National Register in 1982.
- State landmark since 1939California registered the whole town of Woodbridge as Historical Landmark No. 358 in 1939, honoring the ferry crossing and the bridge that gave the town its start and its name.
- Wine countryToday Woodbridge is best known as part of the San Joaquin Valley's winegrowing region, at an elevation of 43 feet beside the Mokelumne.
