About Zachary, Louisiana

Zachary is a city of 19,316 people in East Baton Rouge Parish, 16 miles north of Baton Rouge. Much of the ground it covers was once a 160-acre farm owned by Darel Zachary, who lived from 1827 to 1907. In 1884 the Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railroad bought part of his land to complete its route linking Memphis with New Orleans. The railroad built a depot there, and the settlement that grew up beside it took the farmer's name.

A post office opened in 1885. On August 2, 1889, Zachary was incorporated as a city, and Thomas Edward McHugh became its first mayor. In 1903 a fire swept through the young town. The story goes that a greengrocer started it by using a flame to ripen his bananas. Zachary rebuilt, and its historic village center is made up of buildings that came through the fire or went up soon after. Apart from the depot, the oldest of them is the Allison House of 1898. The Zachary Railroad Depot joined the National Register in 1983.

  • A Republican mayor in 1966In 1966 Zachary elected Jack Louis Breaux as mayor. That made it the first city in Louisiana to choose a Republican mayor since the Reconstruction Era.
  • A library on the moveThe Zachary library opened in 1939 in the former town hall. It then moved to a former post office and later to a third building. In 1966 it settled into space attached to the Louisiana National Bank building. The present 20,000-square-foot library opened on May 4, 2004.
  • Zachary High in the NBAFrank Brian played basketball at Zachary High School and went on to play in the first NBA All-Star Game, in 1950. Kedrick Brown, another Zachary High player, became the first junior college player selected in the NBA draft.
