About Alderwood Manor, Washington
Alderwood Manor is a census-designated place of 10,198 people in Snohomish County. Its land once belonged to the Puget Mill Company, which had already logged it. On June 12, 1917, A. B. Dean filed the first plat for the company, one of twenty plats that together covered the Alderwood Manor properties. The company divided more than 22,000 acres into tracts of five and ten acres, each sized for raising chickens or small fruit.
Most of the people who settled here kept chickens, and the Seattle-Everett Interurban Railway linked their farms to both cities. By 1926 the district grew poultry, small fruit and filbert nuts and had a post office of its own. The old farm community later became the cities of Lynnwood, Brier and Mountlake Terrace.
- The Wickers Building, 1919From 1919 into the 1960s, the Wickers Building held Alderwood's main store and its post office. It was saved and now stands in Lynnwood's Heritage Park, which opened in 2004. Car 55 of the interurban railway sits in the park as well.
- The Masonic Temple stays putOf all the old Alderwood Manor buildings, only the Masonic Temple remains on its original site, just off 196th Street SW in Lynnwood. The Manor Hardware building nearby began as a schoolhouse in the early 1900s, stood empty for many years and came down in 2015.
- Alderwood Mall, 1979The farm community's name lives on in the Alderwood Mall. It was built in 1979 and became Lynnwood's largest tourist attraction.
