About Aldie, Virginia

Aldie began in 1765, when James and George Mercer built a mill here. By 1809 the Little River Turnpike reached the mill from Alexandria. Charles Fenton Mercer, son of James, then laid out a village at the road's western end. He named it for Castle Aldie, his Scottish clan's ancestral home.

Aldie took its name from the former home of Charles Fenton Mercer. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates and in Congress. He was also a brigadier general in the War of 1812. His Mercer House still stood in an oak grove at the village center in 1941.

  • A president lived nearbyPresident James Monroe was the most famous resident of the Aldie area. He built his private home at Oak Hill in 1822. Today the Aldie Mill Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
