About Arcola, Virginia

Arcola is a community of 2,412 people in southeastern Loudoun County, along the South Fork of Broad Run. It grew up around a small spring beside a gum tree, which gave the place its first name, Gum Springs. In colonial times a distillery, a kiln and a small church stood near that spring.

The U.S. Post Office opened a branch in the village in 1801 and called it Springfield, but that office closed in 1819. Thirteen years later a new office opened south of the village on the busy Little River Turnpike, today's U.S. Route 50. It took its name from the Arcola Farm where it was built, and it stayed there until 1868, when the office moved back into the village. Even so, maps went on calling the village Gum Spring for most of the 19th century.

  • The parish glebeWhen Cameron Parish was formed out of Truro Parish, its glebe lay just northwest of the spring. That was the land set aside to support the parish priest. In 1802 the Virginia General Assembly gave up all Anglican glebes, and the land here was sold off.
  • A railroad that never ranIn the 1850s, builders finished the Loudoun Branch of the Manassas Gap Railroad along the village's northern edge. Then the Panic of 1857 and the Civil War came, and trains never used the line.
  • Union troops in 1863During the Gettysburg campaign of June and July 1863, soldiers of the 11th and 1st Corps of the Union Army of the Potomac marched through Gum Spring and camped around it. Army dispatches named the town as the troops moved north toward Leesburg and on into Maryland.
  • From 30 people to 135Many Loudoun villages stopped growing, but Arcola kept getting bigger well into the twentieth century. It had 30 people in 1876, 90 in 1911 and 135 by 1976.
